Suppliers have added new features and made their hearing protection devices more comfortable. But workers have to use them — and wear them correctly — or hearing loss will continue to remain a major concern for Canadian workers.

When the Ontario government recently introduced its new industrial noise exposure limits, it set out to put a dent into one of the most prevalent occupational ailments — noise-induced hearing loss.

For many workers in a broad range of industries, the constant barrage of noise takes its toll. Hearing loss, the third most common chronic disability (after hypertension and arthritis), afflicts more than one million Canadians, with overexposure to noise accounting for one third of the problems.
